NEW YORK - Thirty years after jumping off a precipice in a car, Thelma & Louise, aka Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, reunite to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the cult film directed by Ridley Scott and winner of the Oscar for Best Screenplay in the 1992. Released in 1991, Thelma & Louise also served to launch the career of then unknown Brad Pitt (in the role of JD).

The two actresses, who in the meantime have also remained friends in life, will retrace the most significant moments of the film as well as behind the scenes, in a special screening on June 18 in a drive-in cinema in Los Angeles. Thelma & Louise will be screened at sunset and the public will relive the adventures of the two women who find themselves two short-lived fugitives to escape the daily routine.

"When we shot Thelma & Louise 30 years ago," Sarandon said, "we had no idea that that kind of cultural impact would last for years. At the time it was revolutionary to have two women in a film without being enemies and we had fun on screen. . I think it was one of the biggest breakthroughs. Today there are so many brilliant actresses who make films in which women are not opponents and have the power to decide their destiny. "

The film, a real manifesto on female friendship, was initially to be played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Jodie Foster, while George Clooney was also considered for JD. Also, the farewell kiss scene between Thelma and Louise was not featured in the script and was Sarandon's idea. Scott, open to improvisation, then abandoned the script that would have seen Thelma survive and Louise the only victim. "We shot the end of the film literally in one take," Sarandon recalls. "We had spent the whole day shooting helicopter scenes and all the other things that had to happen on the last day. We only had one take and I told Ridley 'la I grab and kiss her, 'and he said,' Okay. 'That scene became one of the most memorable movie endings ever.

Since 2016 the film has been in the National Film Registry for its cultural and historical value and as such must be preserved.
