The renowned Parisian Museum Center Pompidou wants to open a branch not in, but directly next to the metropolis of New York.
The exhibition hall in the city of Jersey City in the US state of New Jersey - only separated from New York by the Hudson River - should open in 2024, said representatives of the Center Pompidou and the state.
Provided the city council approves the plans, the Paris outpost could open in 2024, writes the New York Times.
The exhibitions are to be shown in a former industrial building.
The house is to be specially converted for this.
The cost estimates are between ten and thirty million US dollars.
The money will come from private financiers and federal funds.
The city hopes not only for the attraction of one of the most important art collections worldwide, but also for effects for the city's marketing, if the place is connected with the name of the well-known institution.
The project is entitled: "Center Pompidou x Jersey City".
As the New York Times reports, Jersey City has committed to pay up to six million US dollars a year to the museum as long as the cooperation exists.
The money will be used to pay for the project and advertising costs, as well as the exhibitions and educational programs.
The Center Pompidou in Paris opened in 1977. According to the institution, the art and culture center's collection comprises more than 120,000 works of modern and contemporary art. The branch in the USA would not be the first branch of the museum, which is due to close for a comprehensive renovation between 2023 and 2027: There are already branches in Malaga, Brussels and Shanghai, Spain.
