A large British memorial overlooking the Normandy
D-Day
beaches will be inaugurated today in Ver-sur-Mer
to pay homage to the 22,442 men and women who lost their lives in 1944 to free Europe from Nazism.
"It is the only place where all the names appear - explained Steven Dean, project manager, interviewed by AFP - it took a lot of research to find them all". Dean explained that 38 nationalities of soldiers landed under British command, among these there were also 177 Frenchmen of the "Commando Kieffer".
The ceremony begins at 10:30 am in the presence of the French Defense Minister, Florence Parly, and the British Ambassador to France, Ed Llewellyn.
In a message posted in French on the memorial website, Prince Charles paid homage to the "national memorial" erected on an "impressive" and "long-deserved" site.
