Today (Sunday) children aged 12-15 are starting to be vaccinated in Israel against Corona. Opinions on this move are divided, and while some experts recommend getting vaccinated, others are calling for a little wait for more information, fearing, among other things, that the vaccine may produce myocarditis. The one who dropped the spoon in favor of those in a hurry to get vaccinated is Rochelle Wolansky, director of the American Centers for Disease Control (CDC) who noted increased rates of hospitalization in teens with covid-19 in March and April, urging parents to vaccinate their teens to protect them from a possible illness Difficult even among young people.

"I am deeply concerned about the number of hospitalized adolescents, and sad to see the number of adolescents who need intensive care units or need respirators," Wolensky said in a statement released this weekend alongside a new study examining hospitalization trends among adolescents with corona.

"A lot of this suffering can be prevented," Wolensky added, calling on "parents, relatives and close friends to join me and talk to teens about the importance of prevention strategies and encouraging vaccination."

The study showed that nearly a third of those teens hospitalized with covid-19 in a sort of surge of cases at the beginning of the year needed intensive care, and five percent needed respirators.

While most covid-19 hospitalizations occur in older adults, it has been shown that serious illness requiring hospitalization occurs in all age groups.

The report showed that hospitalization rates of corona patients among adolescents declined in January and February, but increased during March and April, even as hospitalization rates stabilized among those aged 65 and over, probably due to the high vaccination rates in this population.

In Israel, there is a significant debate about whether or not to vaccinate children against corona.

Researchers suggest that increased hospitalization among adolescents in March and April may be related to a number of factors, including more transmitted and more dangerous virus variations, a larger number of young people returning to school and changes in behaviors such as distance keeping, mask wearing and more.

Although the study was conducted on a small group of adolescents, CDC staff and other experts expressed concern about the potential for serious illness and stressed the importance not only of vaccination but also of continuing to wear masks and other preventive behaviors until fully vaccinated.

"Vaccination is our way out of this epidemic," Wolanski said, "I continue to see promising signs in the CDC data that we are nearing the end of this epidemic in the US, however, we all need to do our part and get vaccinated to cross the finish line."

The new study is based on data from a CDC-related monitoring network conducted in laboratories in 99 counties in 14 states, covering about 10 percent of the U.S. population. The study examined 376 adolescents ages 12 to 17 who were hospitalized between January 1 and March 31 and tested positive. Corona virus. Out of all those hospitalized, 204 young people were hospitalized, with 31 percent hospitalized in the intensive care unit and 5 percent in need of a respirator. None of the teens died.

About 70 percent of the 204 adolescents hospitalized for corona had at least one background disease - the most common being obesity.

However, nearly 30 percent did not report a background illness, suggesting that healthy adolescents are also at risk for

disease The

researchers said covid-19 cumulative hospitalization rates among adolescents from October 1, 2020, to April 24, 2021, were high 2.5 to three times the hospitalization rates of seasonal flu during the last three flu seasons.

"Influenza very rarely causes long-term symptoms and organ damage, unlike covid-19," said Professor Andrew Pavia, an expert in pediatrics and infectious diseases at the University of Utah. "Adolescents have many reasons to get vaccinated as soon as possible, including their own health, ability to help control corona. Among weaker groups and the ability to return to normal life. "
