PMA for all: a law promulgated in July?

2021-06-07T13:34:27.113Z

The promise of the candidate Macron, who returns to the deputies this Monday, June 7, then the senators from June 24, seems this time known

As a member of Parliament remembers, the situation is atypical.

"I don't think this has happened very often", underlines Agnès Firmin Le Bodo, Member of Parliament (Agir, ex LR), president of the bioethics law commission.

This Monday, this bill and its flagship measure of the opening of PMA (medically assisted procreation) to all women, single or lesbian couples, returns to third reading in the National Assembly until June 11.

Since September 2019, deputies and senators, who cannot agree, have debated the text twice each.

After the Assembly, it will be up to the senators, from June 24, to work on the text, then the deputies will have the last word.

The government wants to see the law promulgated in July.

"Women who are waiting for this new right [must be able to] benefit from it as soon as possible", recalled the Minister of Health Olivier Véran, this Sunday.

1,800 amendments tabled

In total, 1,800 amendments were tabled against this controversial bill, boasted by some and hailed by others as the only true progressive reform of the Macron era.

"The text, as it is presented, creates a new right for women", greets Nicolas Faget, spokesperson for the APGL (association of gay and lesbian parents and future parents), when supporters of the Manif for all will gather at 7 pm this Monday and Tuesday to the cries of "All born of a father and a mother!"

"

In addition to the opening of assisted reproduction to lesbian couples and single women, the text provides for a reform of filiation and the lifting of donor anonymity.

It also addresses a number of complex subjects such as the self-preservation of oocytes or research on embryonic stem cells.
