The sight of a snake in a pool of water can be a terrifying experience for hikers, but for Liron Shapira, the nature conservation coordinator for the North Nature Conservation Society, it caused the camera to be pulled out and the snake documented exactly that it was a fish hunter.

The special documentation happened yesterday (Saturday) in one of the pools in the Harod Valley.

"I left in the morning, settled in and started the observation," Shapira told Walla !.

"Soon, I discovered many snakes active at the edge of the pool, among the weeds."

According to Shapira, this is

a water snake embedded in the

species: Natrix Tessellata, the only water snake in Israel whose main food is fish and amphibians.

It is non-toxic and does not pose any danger to humans.

"I saw fish hunting twice"

"During a few hours of observation I saw twice a fish hunt. This happens in seconds so you have to be very alert! The snakes catch the fish in a dive and then swim with them to shore, in order to swallow them. Sometimes, when the fish is too big, it releases and escapes "I had a unique observation, and I will definitely return to the place again," Shapira added.

The fish ponds - a habitat for a huge variety of animals

According to Shapira, the fish ponds in the Jezreel Valley are a source of water and a habitat for a huge variety of animals: birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and more.

"The ponds are very important as an expression of moist habitats that have disappeared from the natural landscape. I photograph a lot in the fish ponds, every season of the year, the wildlife that is characteristic of it. I received the information about water snake activity from one of the ponds," he concludes.
