(ANSA) - BRAZIL, JUN 07 - The Brazilian president, JairBolsonaro, said today that the number of virus deaths in his country could be 50% lower than the official toll, which reports over 473 thousand victims since the start of the pandemic.
"I give you first-hand news: the Court of Auditors does not confide in the number of deaths from Covid last year; about 50% of those attributed to the virus would not actually lose", said the head of state. "This report came out a few days ago: logically the press will not disclose it, I have already passed it to three serious journalists and now we will disclose it," Bolsonaro added during an informal conversation in Brasilia.
It is not the first time that the far-right leader, considered a denier, has questioned the death toll, while some local researchers believe that the number of dead and infected is "underestimated" in Brazil.
