After having to change planes due to a technical problem, US Vice President Kamala Harris landed in Guatemala to begin an official visit to the Central American country, the first since in office.
According to reports from the Guatemalan newspaper Prensa Libre, for Harris's visit there was a strong deployment of national police forces of the Central American country with the support of the army.
Harris will meet the President of Guatemala Alejandro Giammattei today, and at 11 am local time (7 pm Italian time) they will issue a joint statement. The US vice president will leave the country today to travel to Mexico, where she will meet with President Manuel López Obrador.
During his visit, Harris is expected to sign three agreements with Guatemala that include border security, anti-corruption and economic development issues, as confirmed by Juan González, director of hemispheric affairs at the White House Security Council.
With the trip to Guatemala and Mexico, Kamala Harris intends to deepen diplomatic relations with two Latin American nations that are fundamental to the efforts of the United States government to curb the arrival of migrants in the country.
Since being tasked by President Joe Biden with the issue of migration at the US-Mexico border, Harris has presented an approach focused on creating better living opportunities and conditions in the region through humanitarian and economic aid.
At the end of April, the US vice president already announced plans to send $ 310 million to support the needs of migrants and refugees in Central America, and recently pledged a dozen companies and organizations to invest in so-called countries. of the Northern Triangle (Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador) to promote economic opportunities and professional training.
