Kamala Harris in Guatemala for her first official visit

(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 07 - After having to change planes due to a technical problem, the vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris landed last night in Guatemala to begin an official visit to the Central American country, the first since in office.


    According to reports from the Guatemalan newspaper PrensaLibre, for Harris's visit there was a strong deployment of national police forces of the Central American country with the support of the army.


    Harris will meet today the President of Guatemala AlejandroGiammattei, and at 11 am local time (7 pm Italian time) they will issue a joint statement. The US Vice President will leave the country today to go to Mexico, where she will meet President Manuel López Obrador.


    During his visit, Harris is expected to sign three agreements with Guatemala that include border security, anti-corruption and economic development issues, as confirmed by Juan González, director of global affairs at the White House Security Council.


    With the trip to Guatemala and Mexico, Kamala Harris intends to deepen diplomatic relations with two Latin American nationals who are fundamental to the efforts of the United States government to curb the arrival of migrants in the country.


    Since being tasked by President Joe Biden with the US-Mexico border migration theme, Harris has presented an approach focused on creating better living opportunities and conditions in the region through humanitarian and economic aid. (HANDLE).
