A whole thousand-year-old chicken egg was discovered in a sewer in Yavne

A few ancient whole chicken eggs are known around the world, but the egg that was found in the excavation prior to the establishment of a neighborhood in Yavne was preserved thanks to its fall into a manhole that contained soft human secretions that protected it.

"Even at a global level, this is a very rare find," says a researcher of ancient birds

The archaeologists excavating in Yavneh did not believe what they saw: during an excavation in a septic tank - a domestic sewage pit that dates to the Islamic period about 1,000 years ago, an ancient chicken egg was removed from the ground in complete condition.

The large archaeological excavation, led by Dr. Eli Hadad, Liat Nadav-Ziv and Dr. John Seligman, reveals, among other things, a wide and varied industrial area from the Byzantine period, and is being held as part of a project by the Israel Land Authority to expand the city.

"It's amazing to think this is a 1,000-year-old find!"

"Eggshell fragments are also known from earlier periods, for example - in the city of David, Caesarea and Apollonia, but due to the fragile shell of the egg, almost whole chicken eggs have not been preserved. Even at a world level, this is a very rare find," says Dr. Lee Perry Gal. Archaeologist at the Israel Antiquities Authority and expert on birds in the ancient world. "In archeology we rarely find whole ancient ostrich eggs, which are preserved due to their thicker shell.

" "Even today, the eggs barely survive in the writer's cartons.

It's amazing to think that this is a 1,000-year-old find! "Says Ella Nagorsky, an archaeologist with the Israel Antiquities Authority, in whose territory the discovery was made." It seems that the unique preservation of the swamp stems from the conditions it lived in for hundreds of years. ".

Eggs instead of pork

The poultry farm came into use in the Land of Israel as early as 2,300 years ago - in the Hellenistic period and in the Early Roman period. In the Islamic period, beginning in the 7th century AD, a significant decrease in the percentage of pig bones was observed at sites in our area - an expression of the ban on eating pork. "Families were looking for a replacement for a protein available in a small animal that does not require preservation and refrigeration, and they found it in poultry and eggs," explains Dr. Perry Gal. "Unfortunately, the egg was found with a crack at the bottom, so most of the material seeped out. Only a few remnants of yolk remained, which were kept for future testing of aDNA (Ancient DNA test - ZR). "

Despite the caution taken during the removal of the egg from the field, accompanied by an expert guard, the egg shell, whose unique conditions under the ground maintained its integrity, cracked In the organic laboratory of the Israel Antiquities Authority, the guard Ilan Naor performed medicine in the swamp, which was returned to a complete condition.

How did the egg actually get into the septic tank?

There is no knowing.

Interestingly, next to the swamp, other spectacular finds were extracted from the pit, including three bone dolls typical of the Islamic period, which were used for play 1,000 years ago.
