Several suspects are said to have booked and resold thousands of train tickets with crooked credit card details for years.

In a major raid, five suspects have now been arrested, said the federal police and the Traunstein public prosecutor's office.

The five suspects are therefore in custody.

According to the information, 350 police officers searched 16 objects in Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony-Anhalt.

The investigators lead a total of 20 suspects, some of whom are said to be in other European countries.

The alleged fraudsters are said to have stolen credit card details through phishing.

Using this data, they are said to have booked a total of 13,300 train tickets since 2018.

According to the police, this caused damage of around 450,000 euros to the railway because the tickets were not paid for.

The suspects are said to have used the booked tickets themselves or sold them to a network of 2,500 customers using social media.

Notice from Deutsche Bahn

The starting point of the investigation, which has been ongoing since 2020, was a hint from Deutsche Bahn, it said.

The investigations were carried out by an investigative group set up by the Federal Police Inspectorate for Combating Crime in Munich to combat computer fraud.

The Traunstein District Court issued 21 search warrants and five arrest warrants.

The public prosecutor's office in Traunstein said it was responsible for the proceedings because at least some of the main suspects live in their area of responsibility.

The police and the public prosecutor did not provide any details about the searched objects.

The measures, during which extensive evidence such as smartphones and computers were seized according to the police, had started in the early hours of the morning, but continued in the morning.
