The actor, songwriter and singer speaks exclusively about his new play 'In the Heights', which he calls "a love letter to immigrants." It also offers a way to combat discrimination against Latinos.

The famous actor, composer and singer of Puerto Rican origin Lin-Manuel Miranda

spoke exclusively with Hoy Día about the premiere of his new production 'In the Heights' and assures that his story "is a love letter" to all Latinos who decide migrate to the United States.

In addition, he talks about the migrants who cross the southern border of the country every day.

In an interview with Nacho Lozano, the artist points out that his most recent work

is dedicated to immigrants and the Latino culture in the country

.

"I am of the first generation, I am a New Yorker, my parents were born in Puerto Rico and in order to write

this love letter to our Latin people, to our parents and grandparents who did miracles here in the United States, so that I could make art.

My dad made so many jobs for me to go to college. Feeling that Latino pride is incredible, "he says.

Miranda has made it clear in her works over the years that Latin pride is in her blood.

For him,

"having reached Broadway is a miracle," he said, as he had to have a lot of patience and faith to achieve it,

two things that the story of 'In the Heights' portrays.

That is why he is very excited about the upcoming Broadway reopening, he said, as there are many Latino families working there who were affected by the closing of theaters due to the coronavirus pandemic.

More and more people are crossing the border fleeing crime, violence, poverty and natural disasters.

Images of minors have even been seen crossing the country's border alone, as was the case of the Nicaraguan boy Wilto.

"I am a father and it breaks your heart. You can't feel anything. I don't know what it would take to send my children, I don't even know how to say it in Spanish," Miranda admitted.

The creator and star of the hit musical

Hamilton

praised the Latino community, assuring that all migrants deserve to be treated with dignity.

"People are making unthinkable decisions, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect," he stressed.

Miranda's new musical 'In the Heights' proposes that

Latinos are in many ways the next chapter in American history,

as they are the fastest growing segment of the population.

In this story, the Latino community in the United States shows their dreams, the struggle to achieve them, and the frustration that comes with not always achieving them.

In addition, the Latin rhythms and the unity that characterizes the characters.

Miranda believes that

one of the best ways to combat discrimination against Latinos is through art.

"I remember when I was little and the movie 'La Bamba' came out, which was so important to me because my grandfather is Mexican.

Seeing a Mexican boy singing and having success in the United States taught me that it was possible.

And when you see that history and that of 'Sonny' in our film, who is about an undocumented and a dreamer, who is so New Yorker, who loves his neighborhood and wants to change the world, I think you can't go back to the division we talked about in the migration in the US ", he assures.

That is why he strongly believes in the idea that

one day a

dreamer

could be president of the country.

"I think it will happen. I hope it happens in my life. We really are the population with the highest growth in the US I do not know if I am going to be 50 or 80 years old, but I would love to see it," he concluded.
