With the participation of Syria, the work of the Arab Regional Technical Meeting on Education for Sustainable Development for 2030 was held today, organized by the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization “UNESCO” virtually.

The meeting aims to discuss special needs and adopted approaches and encourage member states in the Arab region to commit to implementing the goals of education for sustainable development, especially launching and developing special country initiatives, and providing technical guidance to member states regarding future prospects at the regional and national levels.

In the speech of the Minister of Education, Dr. Darem Tabbaa, head of the Syrian National Committee for UNESCO, which was read by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Riad Tayfour, Tayfour stressed that achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals requires addressing development issues in new ways that address national and regional challenges on the Both, especially those related to the effects of wars and global hegemony, linking theories to practice and laying clear foundations for them to convince generations of the need to work on achieving the fourth element of the plan, which is the means of implementation and global partnership.

Tayfur suggested making a global appeal to stop the environmental deterioration in the region as a result of wars and political and economic pressures exerted on its people and working to secure factors of stability by educating them, stressing attention to issues of quality and sustainable development through the great efforts of the concerned national authorities and keenness to achieve further progress.

Tayfour pointed to the contribution of some ministries to achieving sustainable development through the work of the Ministry of Education by designing curricula on the 17 sustainable development goals and designing professional curricula to include branches of agriculture, tourism, industry and trade from the fourth to the ninth grade, in addition to launching a number of projects such as the “Get ready to go to school” project and authoring English language curricula for kindergarten, the necessary training manuals, and the development of a response plan within the Corona pandemic, as well as the continuation of training courses related to capacity-building and rehabilitation of workers.

Tayfour touched on the work of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to link scientific research plans with the national development program for post-war Syria 2030, and attention and follow-up to improving the quality of technical education, raising its efficiency, and moving towards digital transformation to develop research capabilities, better investment of energies, providing free education for all youth groups, and gender equality in education. .

Tayfour indicated that the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform considered that education at all levels is the way to establish a rural community that manages natural resources in a sustainable manner and one of the important means to address the problems resulting from climate changes by integrating the concepts of sustainability of natural resources and rational use of them and solutions to face the effects of climate changes in the approved educational curricula, in addition To spread the culture required for this through training courses and field schools for farmers, livestock breeders and the local community.

Tayfour explained that the Ministry of Culture was keen to open adult education courses through education departments and centers for them in all governorates, printing and distributing educational curricula books to all departments and centers, and establishing illiteracy eradication courses for people with special needs.

Tayfur indicated that the Syrian Trust for Development, as a partner and representative of the local community, has launched several programs, the most important of which is the Masar program for children from 5 to 15 years old. It also launched the debate program for adolescents and youth, and the Community Beacons Program, which are the main points of influence through which the Syrian Trust for Development seeks to Creating positive change within the surrounding communities.

This meeting comes within the framework of the follow-up to the outcomes of the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development 2030, which was held virtually during the period from 17 to 19 of last May.
