Anti-Covid vaccination: how do foreign countries try to convince the recalcitrant?

2021-06-12T11:26:17.155Z

In recent weeks, several countries have found themselves facing a new difficulty: while the most motivated have been vaccinated, it is necessary

After the promising start of the vaccination against Covid-19, long awaited as the doses were running out, several countries find themselves facing a new problem: the rate of injections, which has skyrocketed, is stalling.

The most motivated part of the population has already received at least one dose - or even two - and the most reluctant are dragging their feet.

This is what happened in the United States, in Israel, in the United Kingdom or in Mongolia and, to a certain extent, in France more recently.

To counter this phenomenon, the authorities are getting organized.

Israel has relied on a "big communication effort", to transmit information on vaccination "in an intelligible way", decrypts Professor Cyrille Cohen, immunologist at Bar-Ilan University and member of the advisory board on clinical trials of vaccines against Covid-19.

The country has also been able to count on a virtuous circle.

"The recalcitrant, who thought it was dangerous, saw that the vaccinated had not all fallen like flies after three months but that they are starting to revive," said the professor.

There was also the health pass effect, "for those who wish to travel, go to the gym ...", he lists.

As for the last refractory, "we must be prepared for the fact that some will not want to be vaccinated at all," concludes Professor Cyrille Cohen.

In the United States, a not so new method

In the United States too, the rate of vaccination has also slowed down considerably. The government launched the “month of action” in June to reach 70% of the population by July 4 - up from nearly 52% on June 9. To participate in this momentum, pharmacies are invited to open 24 hours a day every Friday. The other method, encouraged by the national State but implemented at the level of States, municipalities or even directly businesses, is the incentive by the gift. Free drinks or menus, tickets for shows, lottery tickets - up to a million dollars a week are at stake in Ohio-, scholarships and even joints when the legislation allows it… Which seems unusual to us is "quite commonplace" on the other side of the Atlantic, comments Elisa Chelles, professor of political science at Paris Nanterre and author of Understanding health policy in the United States. In this country, where the vaccine obligation against Covid-19 is "not possible", the incentive is an effective method. "Having the possibility of winning a million dollars, that can tempt some refractory", continues the specialist.

Elsewhere in the world, similar initiatives are flourishing, such as in India, Russia or China, where gifts in exchange for an injection range from piercing to the blender, including ice cream and eggs.
