The leader of the PCI was hit by a stroke during a rally in Padua on 7 June.

He collapsed on live television, clearly tried by illness but continued the speech, even though the crowd, after the supporting choirs, shouted: "Enough Enrico!".

At the end of the meeting he returned to the hotel where he fell into a coma.

After the consultation with a doctor, he was transported to the Giustinianeo hospital and hospitalized in dramatic conditions.

He died on June 11, due to a cerebral hemorrhage.

Two million people attended his funeral on June 13 in Rome.
