Subscription, video streaming, delivery service ... Amazon Prime, how does it work?

2021-06-14T03:08:27.127Z

The global trade giant's premium subscription is packed with features and content. Little practical guide.

With the retransmission of sporting events, the premium offer (video and music streaming, book libraries) takes on a little more depth.

Price, operation, content… Five questions to know everything about the Amazon Prime service.

What services?

The Amazon e-commerce platform Prime subscription guarantees free one-day delivery on many products. It also gives access to Prime Video, a video streaming service, to Prime Reading and its library of books, as well as restricted access to Amazon Music, the music streaming platform (for which you have to pay 9.99 euros more per month for the complete catalog).

How to get there?

The subscription costs 5.99 euros per month without commitment or 49 € for a full year.

For comparison Netflix offers a basic subscription at 7.99 euros and Disney + 8.99 euros or 89.90 euros for one year.

All services are available on any connected screen (computers, tablets, smartphones).

For Prime Video, the platform is also accessible on television thanks to the operators' boxes, if they are not too old, or to connected televisions, as well as by Chromecast or by connecting its computer to the television by cable.

What content?

Prime Video has a large catalog of several thousand content: movies (“Indiana Jones”, “The Godfather”) series (“Jack Ryan”, “The Boys”) shows, documentaries. The recent announcement of the MGM studio buyout plan for 8.45 billion dollars should allow it to enrich this offer with sagas like that of James Bond, or nearly 4,000 films and 17,000 TV content. At the same time, many productions have been launched around the world, including the French series "Mixte", which starts on Monday, or programs like "Lol: qui rit, sort!" ". Prime Video sets itself apart from other streaming giants Netflix, Disney + by also launching into the broadcasting of live sporting events, such as women's tennis and the Premier League of football in England,American football in the United States and now Roland-Garros, Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 in France.

How many subscribers?

Globally, Amazon claims more than 200 million followers, 175 million of whom have used its video service. Faced with this giant, Netflix also has 200 million subscribers and Disney +, launched only at the end of 2019, 100 million. With us, Amazon does not announce any figures, but according to Les Echos, just under 10 million French people use one of the Prime services.

Will the price go up?

In other countries where Amazon Prime has already expanded its coverage of sporting events, this has not resulted in a special subscription or price hike. On the other hand, the French benefit from an already very low tariff, so a small increase cannot be excluded. In the UK, Amazon Prime costs 7.99 pounds per month (9.30 euros) or 79 pounds (92 euros) per year or 5.99 pounds (7 euros) per month for access to Prime Video only. A differentiation that does not currently exist in France). In the United States, Amazon Prime costs $ 12.99 (10.70 euros) per month, 119 dollars per year (98 euros) or even 8.99 dollars (7.40 euros) for Prime Video only.
