(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 14 - Ned Beatty, indefatigable Hollywood actor several times nominated for an Oscar and well-known face of 'Quiet weekend of fear' and 'Superman', has died at the age of 83. This was announced to CNN by Deborah Miller, Talent Manager of the Shelter Entertainment Group.
'Deliverance', a 1972 film directed by John Boorman in which he played one of the four friends of Georgia who set out on a canoe trip that seems full of dangers, to consecrate him to fame. In 1976 he starred in Sidney Lumet's Fifth Estate, winning a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 1978 he is the wimp Otis in "Superman". His theatrical, television and film roles are countless.
Born and raised in Kentucky, fishing and working on farms, Beatty began working as a professional artist at the age of ten, singing in exchange for a few pennies in gospel quartets and in a barber shop.
He then starred in theater in Abingdon, Virginia, WashingtonD.C and Broadway. His other films include 'The President's All Men', 'The Big Easy', 'Hear My Song' and most recently 'The Walker', 'Charlie Wilson's War' and 'Shooter'. (HANDLE).
