Half-year balance sheet for electricity and gas prices: Energy is getting more expensive

Consumers in Germany not only have to pay more at the petrol station than at the beginning of the year - the prices for electricity and gas have also risen.

That shows the half-year balance of the comparison portal Verivox.

The average electricity price * for a household with an annual electricity consumption of 4,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) has risen slightly since the beginning of the year.

In January 2021 it was 1,171 euros, in June it was 1,197 euros.

This corresponds to an increase of almost 2 percent and annual additional costs of 26 euros.

Electricity prices in an upward trend

The rise in the electricity price level is mainly due to prices outside the local basic supply. Because since January 2021, increases and decreases have been roughly balanced: A total of 132 basic providers have announced or have already implemented price increases averaging 3 percent. A model household with an annual consumption of 4,000 kWh pays an average of 37 euros more. This contrasts with 143 price reductions averaging 2 percent over the same period, which corresponds to a relief of an average of 30 euros.

"

Nowhere in Europe is electricity as expensive as in Germany,

" says Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox, according to the announcement. “The majority of the roughly 820 local basic electricity suppliers have not changed their electricity prices so far this year, they remain at this top level. In view of rising wholesale prices, the price trend is pointing up rather than down. "

The rising price trend is particularly evident in the low-cost new customer tariffs: while electricity in the cheapest fair tariff cost 928 euros a year in January, it was 1,031 euros in June - an increase of 11 percent.

“Electricity providers who actively recruit new customers usually calculate their prices at short notice.

If the purchase prices of suppliers in the wholesale sector rise or fall, this is often the first place where price trends become noticeable, ”says Storck.

Consumers who have never changed their provider can still save an average of 320 euros in June if they leave the expensive basic service tariff (1,351 euros).

Verivox: Gas prices have risen significantly

Heating with gas has become significantly more expensive.

The average gas price for a single-family house with a gas consumption of 20,000 kWh has risen by around 5 percent since January 2021.

If the gas costs at the beginning of the year were an average of € 1,162, they are now € 1,221.

Since January 2021, a total of 390 local basic gas suppliers have

announced or have already implemented

price increases averaging 7 percent

.

A household with a single-family house and an annual consumption of 20,000 kWh has to pay an average of 94 euros more.

In the same period, 16 gas suppliers have announced price reductions averaging 6 percent, which means an average annual relief of 84 euros.

Over half of the approximately 710 local basic gas suppliers increased their gas prices this year

.

The main reason for this is the newly introduced CO2 price on fossil fuels, ”says Thorsten Storck.

“As it continues to rise in the coming years, gas prices will also continue to rise.

Heating with fossil fuels will become more and more expensive in the long term. "

Here, too, a change of provider helps to save.

Those who are still on the expensive basic supply tariff pays an average of 1,516 euros a year for gas in June.

The cheapest fair tariff costs 994 euros - a potential saving of 522 euros.

Those who are already on the cheapest tariff of their local supplier pays 1,298 euros - so they still have savings potential of 304 euros.
