A new salary report shows: Employees from health, care and social services earn below average in a nationwide comparison.
How satisfied are the employees themselves?
Against the background of the Corona crisis,
health and nurses
in particular are moving
more into the focus of the public. Politicians reacted recently and decided to adjust salaries as part of a care reform. But how satisfied are employees in the health and care sector with their salary * at the moment? The
StepStone Salary
Report 2021, which is based on a total of around 250,000 salary data, now provides answers.
Basically, the average
gross salary of
the occupational group health, care and social services is around
45,700 euros
compared to the national
average
salary
of just under 57,000 euros.
At 43 percent, the average wage satisfaction is lower than that of employees in Germany across all occupational groups (49 percent).

Satisfaction increases with the size of the salary - but with exceptions
A closer look at the remuneration of the nursing staff reveals: Above all, the
majority of geriatric nurses (around 64 percent) are dissatisfied with an annual average gross salary of around 38,000 euros
. When nursing staff climb the career ladder, satisfaction with their salary also rises as a rule: almost half (49 percent) of the nursing staff are satisfied with an average gross salary of around 50,100 euros. This makes them more dissatisfied than the average German with their salary, but more satisfied than many of their colleagues in the professional environment. A similar picture emerges with specialist nurses: With an average of 48,200 euros, they earn slightly less than nurses with managerial tasks, with which around 50 percent of those surveyed are satisfied.
“However, the
level of the salary is not the only decisive factor in determining whether employees are satisfied or not
. For many, working with people and the meaningfulness of the job also have an impact on whether they are overall happy with their job, ”says
StepStone
salary expert André Schaefer. This can be seen, for example, in the case of remedial carers: Although the remuneration here, at an average of 40,000 euros, is significantly lower than the national average, a good two thirds of the respondents (64 percent) are satisfied with their income. A majority of paramedics (67 percent) are also satisfied with an average gross salary of just under 37,500 euros.

"Fair remuneration makes nursing professions more attractive"
Relying on the fact that many employees in the health and care industry see their work as a calling will no longer be enough in the future.
“The corona pandemic recently clearly showed us how important and systemically relevant professions in nursing and health care are.
The employees were often referred to as the 'everyday heroes'.
At the same time, many companies complain about the shortage of skilled workers.
Recently, there was even a threat of layoffs in the industry.
Fair and transparent remuneration ensures that the attractiveness of many professions in the health sector increases significantly again, ”emphasizes André Schaefer.
Because the demand is great.
Most recently, the
number of newly advertised care jobs on
StepStone.de rose
by around 37 percent compared to the previous year
.
