In a town near the Italian capital Rome, a man shot two children playing and an old man on Sunday.
The victims are two brothers aged five and ten and an 84-year-old, as the mayor of Ardea, Mario Savarese, announced.
The motive for the crime is still unclear.
After the shooting at the children and the old man, the alleged shooter holed up in a house for several hours.
Savarese said emergency services had tried unsuccessfully to make him surrender.
The man was found dead.
"Badly shaken"
The 84-year-old is said to have been fatally shot while riding past the shooter on his bike.
The children were playing outside of town when they were hit, it said.
Rome's mayor Virginia Raggi expressed her condolences to the relatives and the whole city.
"The death of the two children and the old man shook us badly."
