Fire scene in Mainz: around 80 people brought to safety

A fire in a high-rise kept the Mainz fire brigade in suspense.
In the morning, the fire in the building had ignited, an apartment on the 14th floor of the house was already on fire when the emergency services arrived, as a police spokesman said.
According to the police, more than 100 people are registered in the high-rise.
The police were initially unable to provide any information about the injured or the cause of the fire.
The fire brigade, ambulance service and police are on site with a large number.
The area was largely closed to traffic, it said.
A fire department spokesman told the “Allgemeine Zeitung”: “The floors 15-18 were also heavily affected by smoke.” A total of around 80 people were rescued from the building in Mainz-Gonsenheim.
They are looked after on site, there are currently no injuries among them.
According to the city spokesman, 60 people from the professional fire brigade and the Mainz volunteer fire brigade are on duty.
The area is largely closed to traffic.
The cause of the fire is so far unclear.
