Representatives of the Ministries of Agriculture, Agrarian Reform, Industry, Communications, Technology, Public Works, Housing, Electricity, Local Administration and Environment, on the second day of the Damascus University Scientific Research Workshop for 2021, reviewed the most prominent practical problems facing their sectors and ways to address them through scientific research.

The scientific research required to be conducted in the agricultural field focused on the use of biotechnology and molecular biology techniques in breeding and improving strategic crops such as wheat, barley and cotton, studies to develop high-yield cotton varieties, genetic improvement of vegetable crops and fruit trees, and epidemiological investigation of transboundary diseases in livestock.

In the industrial field, the interventions focused on the necessity of conducting research to help use nanotechnology in the textile and cement industry, rehabilitating public industrial companies damaged and destroyed by terrorism, and manufacturing spare parts needed for production lines and machines, as well as manufacturing medical devices, especially the respirator.

In the field of communications and technology, they discussed the importance of conducting research related to digital transformation, cloud computing, integration of government information systems, big data analysis, information security, cybersecurity requirements and indicators at the national level, national coding to serve the postal corporation’s business, methods for detecting fraud in the field of communications, identifying security breaches on optical cable paths, and measuring the density of cables. Intensity of electromagnetic radiation for telecommunication towers, studies on 5G networks, improving the efficiency of solar panels, and mathematical modeling.

The research axes in the public works and housing sector dealt with the need to study transportation structures, regional connectivity, the structure of city entrances and waterfronts, the development of executive mechanisms for regional plans, addressing the situation of informal settlements affected by terrorism, the use of modern construction techniques, waste recycling, dynamic analysis of facilities, and the use of modern technologies in monitoring earthquakes and climate changes. Natural and lively.

In the field of electricity, the research presented focused on the possibility of using techniques to improve the performance of boilers in Syria, the economic feasibility of seawater desalination, the optimal operation of thermal power plants with hydroelectric plants, linking small generating sets to distribution networks, studies on expanding the generation capacities of the Syrian electrical system, reducing environmental impacts, and modifying control systems in Generating stations in addition to conducting studies for the investment of renewable energies.

Researches in the field of local administration and the environment also touched upon conducting studies on emissions from industrial plants, companies, pharmaceutical plants, oil refineries and sewage, and focusing on the need for environmental issues to be among the priorities because of their repercussions on public health.

Dr. Magda Mufleh, Director General of the General Authority for Scientific Agricultural Research, said in a statement to SANA that the workshop is important in terms of networking between a number of concerned ministries to discuss climate changes that have greatly affected crops and reduced production quantities, which required monitoring of alternative areas for growing crops.

Dr. Jamal Al-Omar, Deputy Minister of Industry, pointed out in a similar statement that there are many problems and research topics in addition to the suffering and challenges facing the industrial sector as a result of the unjust siege imposed on Syria.

In turn, Dr. Muhammad Muhammad, Director of Policies, Strategies and Decision Support at the Ministry of Communications and Technology, stressed the need for cooperation between public authorities and the University of Damascus to come up with research that can be applied in the labor market.

The Damascus University workshop for scientific research for the year 2021 began yesterday, with the participation of more than 1,500 researchers and students in the postgraduate studies, under the title “Towards a participatory applied research”, accompanied by an exhibition of completed scientific research.
