How far he was ready to go as an actor was shown by Ned Beatty in his first screen role in John Boorman's bitterly evil survival drama "Everyone is the first to die".

Beatty plays a slightly overweight city dweller who meets sadistic locals with his friends on an excursion into the loneliness of Georgia.

To save his friend, he has to let them humiliate him to the worst.

In other films, too, Beatty fearlessly gave the figs and villains a face: a rich company owner in the media satire "Network" (1976) or the accomplice of the villain Lex Luthor, who makes life difficult for "Superman". In the Pixar animated film "Toy Story 3" (2010) he lent his voice to a diabolical teddy bear. At the age of 83, Ned Beatty has now died in Los Angeles, according to his management.

Beatty began his artistic career as a musician: he sang in the church choir and later began studying music in his native Kentucky, which he never completed. Instead, he first appeared in regional theaters and moved to Broadway in New York in the mid-1960s. There he drew attention to himself as Willy Loman in »Death of a Salesman«, which brought him first role offers from Hollywood.

Ned Beatty has been in front of the camera for over 200 films, including classics such as "Die Unbrechlichen", "Trans-Amerika-Express" and "Nashville".

In 1987 Beatty shone as a sweating, corrupt cop in the thriller "The Big Easy".

In "Hear My Song" he played one of his rare leading roles and was even allowed to sing as an alleged Irish star tenor.

He made a name for himself on television as Detective Stanley Bolander in the crime series "Homicide".

Ned Beatty was married three times and had eight children.

For his role in "Network" he was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor.
