No less than 1,190 islands make up the Republic of the Maldives, an exotic and beloved destination that captures the imagination of many around the world.
The Maldives government recently announced the sale of 16 islands at a special auction, with the lucky winners getting to choose their chosen island on a 50-year lease.
British lifestyle website Tatler reports that the decision was made as part of attempts to propel the wheels of the Maldives economy, following the protracted corona crisis that has befallen the entire world.
In addition, the winners must undertake to build on their island some resort, with a minimum investment of $ 250,000.
Construction of the resort must begin within 36 months, and the winners must physically reside on their island.
For this purpose, they will initially receive a five-year residence visa.
They must also commit to preserving the natural beauty of the island and follow a strictly ecologically sound set of rules.

Do not build higher than the trees
Ali Shinan, director of the planning department at the Maldives Tourism Ministry, explains that these guidelines include, among other things, a commitment not to build structures that exceed the height of trees on the island, and that no trees will be cut, except in special cases, and after appropriate approvals.
And if a tree is still damaged during construction, the developers must plant two other trees in its place.
According to another directive, a distance of at least five meters must be maintained between the construction site and the boundaries of the forested areas, in order to minimize the ecological damage to flora and fauna.
For now, it is no longer possible to submit bids for the tender, which ended on June 10, which involves a payment of $ 3,250, which in any case will not be returned to the bidders.
But do not worry - in the near future, the Maldives government plans to offer for sale 12 more islands.

"The price is definitely attractive"
The opening prices of the various islands have not been announced, but Tali Yativ, CEO and owner of Spirit World Productions, which specializes in vacations to exotic destinations, notes that according to the information in its possession, the prices start at about $ 1 million for an island that extends over 30 dunams. Additional ones will be offered at opening prices of $ 1.5 and $ 1.8 million and the like.
"This is definitely an attractive price," Yativ notes.
In addition, the government provides entrepreneurs with assistance through local companies, and the investment can be recouped because it is a popular destination among tourists from around the world, a destination where hotels and resorts are very highly occupied. "

Yativ also explains that even without a private island, it is a destination that constantly invents itself in terms of attractions and indulgences, whether it is a special spa located on a lonely island and offers a moonlight massage, a resort where the villa ceilings are transparent and a private swimming pool. In depths five meters deep, in outdoor cinema screenings in unconventional locations and more.
