Action against penis pictures: "Dick pics are violence against women"

There are men who keep sending unsolicited photos of their penis. A London entrepreneur defends herself against this - by wanting to immortalize Dickpics on the Internet forever.

SPIEGEL

: Ms. Scaman, how often do you receive penis pictures without warning?

Scaman

:

Too

often, unfortunately.

Since I've had more than 8000 followers, I've been getting a lot of unwanted direct messages, many of which are penis pictures.

I reported it, wrote Twitter, told my audience about it.

But nothing is done.

I'm really pissed off now.

SPIEGEL

: What annoys you the most?

Scaman

: Dickpics are sexual harassment, violence against women - but not illegal.

Men who send her violate a woman's personal limit every time.

But that never has any consequences.

Women are exposed to this.

Dick pics are a type of tax that you have to pay when you have an opinion as a woman on the internet.

You are then a target.

SPIEGEL

: What is it about the senders?

Sex can't be the goal.

Scaman

: Men send these photos because they want to scare you.

They want you to shut up.

You want to remember who the more powerful person is.

And the vast majority of women who have experienced this are simply silent.

SPIEGEL

: You have now brought up a radical idea against unwanted images: women should publish the Dickpics on the Internet and offer them for sale.

Scaman

: Everyone is currently talking about Non Fungible Token (NFT).

This is data on the blockchain that is used as a certificate of authenticity for digital images.

This allows you to sell digital art for crypto currencies via special marketplaces, for example.

I suggested that women create the Dickpics as NFT art and tag them with the name and Twitter handle of the creator.

The images would be forever inscribed on the blockchain.

And the women could sell the NFTs to the men who want the rights to their picture back.

SPIEGEL

: You launched the NFTtheDP.com website for this purpose.

Has a man already bought his penis back?

Scaman

: I haven't uploaded one myself.

But the mere fact that I published instructions on how this would work technically triggered a lot.

Creating an NFT and offering it for sale is very easy, every woman can do it. My goal is not to have penis images lying around on the blockchain everywhere.

NFTtheDP.com is a debate post.

That already freaked out a lot of men.

SPIEGEL

: Are these penile NFTs actually legal?

Scaman

: No.

It's outrageous: sending a Dickpic without asking is not illegal.

But if I actually turned the Dickpic into an NFT, I could be prosecuted for revenge porn.

SPIEGEL

: Wait a minute - are men angry now?

Scaman

: Yes, because with an NFT, the recipient would suddenly have power and control.

This is not intended if you actually want to make a woman small.

Men began to abuse me or insist on copyrights.

Instead of thinking about not sending these pictures in the first place, the men concentrate on their own feelings.

At the same time these men say: Oh, it's just a penis, don't be like that!

They do not see that a dick pic is not a one-off thrill for a woman, but that she often feels massively harassed and stalked.

SPIEGEL

: Did you also get support?

Scaman

: Yes, from women. Many were enthusiastic and thought the idea was funny. Those with a larger number of followers naturally also told me about harassment. For example, a woman wrote to me that a man had printed out her profile picture, ejaculated on it and sent her a photo of it. Of course you block these people, but they just create new profiles and carry on. They report it to Twitter, go to the police, but nobody does anything. Women suffer alone. There is constant background stress that can make you depressed.
