The well-known US journalist Christiane Amanpour claims to have ovarian cancer.

The 63-year-old presenter said live on CNN on Monday that she had a "successful major operation" behind her and had to undergo chemotherapy for several months.

The broadcaster reported about it.

Amanpour showed the excerpt on her Twitter account:

Amanpour has not been on the air for the past four weeks because of her diagnosis, CNN said.

She was connected from London.

In her post, Amanpour said she wanted to be transparent about her illness.

She emphasized the importance of early detection and encouraged viewers to listen to their bodies and go to checkups.

Amanpour will be stepping down for the time being because of chemotherapy

"You are not only one of the best journalists in the industry, but also one of the toughest," wrote CNN colleague Bianna Golodryga on Twitter, who stood in for Amanpour.

The latter will initially moderate Monday through Wednesday during her chemotherapy, at the end of June she will take three weeks off.

Amanpour became internationally known for her coverage of the 1991 Gulf War.

In the past two decades, the British-Iranian journalist interviewed numerous high-ranking politicians from around the world and reported from crisis areas such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Rwanda and the Balkans.

From 1992 to 2010 she was CNN's chief international correspondent.

She then moved to the news division of ABC, but returned to CNN in 2012.
