After 18 years as the moderator of the “Heute Journal”, Claus Kleber is something of a news legend.
That will soon end: the 65-year-old will not renew his contract at the end of the year, a ZDF spokesman confirmed to SPIEGEL.
The "Bild" newspaper previously reported that Kleber was retiring at the age of 66 to devote himself to his family.
Nothing is known about a channel change so far.
According to the ZDF, one will "think about it in due course" about Kleber's successor.
Kleber is another departure from the news program, in May the presenter Petra Gerster retired after 30 years.
Claus Kleber studied law in Tübingen before becoming a journalist and did his doctorate on private television.
In 1985 he became studio manager of the SWR in Konstanz, reported from 1986 for ARD as a correspondent from the USA, headed the ARD studio in London and then switched to ZDF.
Since February 3, 2003 he has moderated the “Today Journal”.
