(ANSA) - ROME, JUN 15 - Kenya's tourism minister has kicked off a festival that gives elephants their name to promote their protection. This was announced by the BBC, specifying that the event will culminate in an official ceremony on August 12, World Elephant Day.

Those who contribute to their defense will have the possibility to adopt an elephant and give it a name, while the second name will be given by the elders of the Maasai community, based on the history and profile of the pachyderms. The ceremony will take place at Amboseli National Park, which is home to more than 3,000 elephants out of a total population of over 34,000 in the country.

Kenya is carrying out its first wildlife census with the aim of gathering crucial data for its protection. In fact, elephants are often victims of pigeons because of their tusks. (HANDLE).
