At the Fühlinger See in Cologne's Chorweiler district, a boy was apparently rescued at the last minute.
As the Cologne fire brigade announced, the eight-year-old had been taken out of the water by first aiders, and rescue workers then began resuscitation.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening.
A little later, the boy was brought to a hospital in a helicopter "under ongoing resuscitation measures".
The Cologne fire brigade published a photo of the operation on Twitter.
According to the "Kölner Stadtanzeiger", the child had previously been reported missing on the water.
The ambulance crew was there so quickly because they happened to be nearby.
According to the newspaper, a total of 30 emergency services and 15 vehicles were in use.
The child's relatives were also brought to the clinic to accompany the boy after the incident.
