The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella received the President of the Tunisian Republic Kaïs Saïed on an official visit to Italy this morning at the Quirinale, subsequently entertaining him at breakfast.

Present were the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, and the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese.

In the conversation between the president Sergio Mattarella and the president of Tunisia Kais Saied, according to what is learned, the economic relations that make Italy the second commercial partner of Tunisia among the countries of the European Union were recalled.

And, moreover, the important cultural relations between the two countries.

The need to vaccinate the remaining part of the world population, which lives in developing areas, has been commonly expressed.

The pandemic has taught even more that no state can do without the other, that a solidarity and multilateral vision of international relations is needed.

Sergio Mattarella and his Tunisian counterpart Kais Saied dealt with the immigration dossier and, as far as we learn, they agreed that it is an epochal phenomenon, which cannot be resolved only with security policies, which are also necessary to beat the hateful trafficking in men. It was necessary - it was noted at the meeting - to create development conditions in Africa to prevent people from having to emigrate to look for work or escape hunger.

The Libya dossier, as far as we know, was among the issues on the bilateral table. The Tunisian President, in particular, was keen to point out that the situation in that country will stabilize only when mercenaries and foreign troops leave the territory, handing over Libya to the Libyans. Mattarella has defined the pacification of Libya as a priority of Italian foreign policy in support of the United Nations stabilization process.
