The burger comes up trumps with innovative packaging, because the paper consists of 20 percent grass.

Munich - On the occasion of the European Football Championship in 2021, the fast food chain McDonald's has created a new burger: the Deutschlandburger.

However, this is not served in a cardboard box, as usual, but wrapped in innovative paper.

Because 20 percent of the packaging material consists of grass.

With the new packaging, the fast food chain is taking another step towards reducing packaging waste.

"As the market leader in system catering, we want to actively shape the path to reducing plastic and packaging waste," explains Holger Beeck, CEO of McDonald's Germany.

The grass paper requires less energy and water in its production, and the CO2 emissions are also lower than in the previous packaging production.

In addition, the grass paper does not require chemicals or long delivery routes.

According to McDonald's, this saves 70 percent of the packaging material at the Deutschlandburger.

This eliminates more than 60 tons of packaging waste.

McDonald's wants to reduce packaging waste and make it more sustainable

McDonald's is pursuing the goal of producing all sales packaging from 100 percent renewable, recycled or certified materials by 2025.

“In the future, we will use less packaging material and serve more and more burgers in alternative packaging, such as innovative wrap paper,” explains Beeck.

McDonald's has already made some changes to make it more sustainable.

But not all customers are happy about it.

The grass paper is licensed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

FSC is an international non-profit organization that advocates sustainable forest management.

With the grass paper, the FSC seal stands for the fact that normal hay was used, which comes from existing grass areas.

So it does not compete with other possible uses.

The company produces the burger paper, which is also used to wrap the McWraps, with a grass content of 20 percent for the fast food giant.

The grass paper is not only food safe and hygienic, but also has a light aroma of freshly mowed lawn, so
