(ANSA) - NEW YORK, JUN 16 - The most famous marathon in the world now has a rival. The city of New York has in fact approved a second marathon, that of Brooklyn. The race will be held on April 24, 2022. According to the provisional route map, the start will be at McCarren Park, then passing through the long rivers of Williamsburg, Prospect Park, Coney Island. Runners will be given 6 to 7 hours to complete the race.
Brooklyn had been hoping for a marathon for years but the idea had been opposed by New York Road Runners, the organizers of the New York race. According to New York City Runs, the group that will organize the event, between 18,000 and 22,000 participants are expected.
The traditional marathon will instead be held on 7 November but still limited capacity due to the pandemic. There will be 33 thousand runners against over 50 thousand in previous years.
