The nationwide corona case numbers keep falling.

But tick activity is only just getting started.

Does it make sense to also immunize against TBE shortly after the corona vaccination?

Ticks are tough little beasts.

In winter the crawlies go into a freeze.

But as soon as the temperature is at least seven degrees Celsius on several consecutive days, they are up to mischief again.

Many people fall victim to ticks, especially in summer, as their skin is more easily accessible to the bloodsuckers thanks to short pants.

People who spend a lot of time in nature should definitely protect themselves against ticks.

Because the arachnids spread two diseases that

are

life-threatening in the worst case

: early summer meningoencephalitis (TBE), a dangerous form of meningitis, and borreliosis *.

How to protect yourself against ticks

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), there is a risk of becoming infected with TBE, especially in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, southern Hesse, Saxony and southeastern Thuringia.

Suitable clothing or insect-repellent sprays can protect you from this.

When you are out in nature, you should always wear long sleeves and trousers.

Tuck your trouser legs into your socks

to make it difficult

for ticks to

access the skin

.

You can also apply an insect spray to keep ticks off your body at least temporarily.

When you get home, you should also check your body for ticks.

Because the longer the arachnids cling to your skin, the greater the risk that bacteria and viruses will be transmitted.

TBE vaccination despite corona vaccination?

The most effective way to protect yourself from TBE is to have a vaccination.

The Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) recommends keeping a

minimum interval of 14 days

between the corona vaccination and other predictable vaccinations

- both before and after.

That makes sense in order not to overwhelm the immune system.

The time interval does not affect the effectiveness of the vaccinations.

While most Covid vaccines are administered in double doses, the TBE vaccination must first be given a basic immunization with three doses.

This needs to be refreshed every three to five years.
