"Gum disease and specifically periodontitis are currently the main cause of tooth loss in the adult population - explains Luca Landi, Sidp president - In Italy, one in two adults suffers from it. Severe forms of periodontitis, or those responsible for disabling functional, aesthetic and psychological consequences, affecting 11% of the population. On the other hand, cardiovascular diseases require adequate primary prevention together with an effective early diagnosis and are the most lethal class of pathologies causing about the 45% of annual deaths in Europe ".
For Nicola Marco Sforza, Sidp president-elect, "since there is a high concentration of bacteria in the dental plaque of patients suffering from periodontitis and since these can easily enter the bloodstream through the capillaries present in the inflamed gums, their dissemination it can raise the values of some inflammatory parameters such as C-reactive protein (Pcr) and stimulate the formation of atherosclerotic plaques on the arterial walls, the presence of which is associated with a high risk of ischemic phenomena and thrombocytes in the heart and brain, with severe consequences that we can all imagine ".
The Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology has made available a free App, GengiveInforma, which, while not replacing a specialist visit, allows you to calculate the risk of suffering from periodontitis by answering five questions.
