A 17-year-old had a fatal accident while swimming in the Rhine, two girls aged 13 and 14 are still missing.
The search for them near Duisburg should continue in the morning, said a police spokesman.
He did not give any further details.
According to the fire brigade, several people were reported missing in the Rhine near Duisburg on Wednesday afternoon.
When searching from the air, the 17-year-old was spotted in the water and brought ashore in a lifeboat.
She later died in the hospital.
The search for the other two missing girls continued downstream, around 160 workers, including fire and rescue services, as well as two helicopters and several divers were on duty.
The search had to be stopped in the evening after four hours when it was dark.
According to the fire brigade from the night, there was "no more opportunity" to "save the two of them alive."
