During the heat wave on Wednesday, many people in Germany went outside to swim.
But cooling in lakes, rivers or the sea also harbors dangers.
A 59-year-old disappeared while bathing in a quarry pond in the Ortenau district (Baden-Württemberg).
According to friends, the man wanted to cool off in the lake in Schutterwald and suddenly disappeared, the police said.
The emergency call was received around 8 p.m.
A "helpless situation" should be assumed.
A helicopter and divers would also be used.
The search continued in the evening.
Two people are also missing in the Rhine near Duisburg.
Another person was rescued and brought "under resuscitation conditions to the hospital," said the Duisburg fire brigade, according to the dpa news agency.
The question of whether she survived was not answered by a spokesman when asked.
He also gave no information about the age of those affected.
According to a report by »Bild«, there were three girls between the ages of 13 and 15.
According to the fire brigade, several people were reported in the Rhine at around 5:50 p.m.
The search for the missing was interrupted at nightfall.
There were around 160 emergency services, including fire and rescue services, as well as two helicopters and divers on duty.
On Saturday, the body of a 29-year-old was discovered in the Rhine after a swimming accident.
The man had gone swimming in the Rhine the previous Wednesday in Rheinberg-Orsoy (Wesel district) and after a few meters called for help, as the police had announced, citing witnesses.
He tried to save himself on the bank, but then went under.
The body was finally found in the Waal near Nijmegen (Netherlands).
The river Waal is an estuary of the Rhine in the North Sea.
