In 1989, a woman was brutally raped in Central Park, New York. The police then arrested five Latin and African American teenagers. Because of the pressure exerted on the young people, they held themselves responsible for the crime. Long prison terms followed. It was not until years later that it became apparent that those allegedly responsible had been wrongly convicted.
In America in particular, the fate of the so-called
"Central Park Five" is
still being debated.
There is a simple reason for this: prejudice against black and Latin American populations about crime is still widespread.
That's why Netflix decided a few years ago to take up the story of young people in a series entitled
“When They See Us”
- because the topic is more topical than ever and
moves
us
to tears.
