After many years of discussions, disputes and delays, a new ocean has been declared on Earth:

the Southern Ocean

, which is the fifth ocean in number.

In doing so, it joins the Atlantic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Arctic Ocean.

The Live Science website reports that the organization that announced the Southern Ocean is National Geographic Society.

This ocean encompasses the continent of Antarctica, and in fact discussions regarding its definition as a separate ocean began nearly 100 years ago.

Scientists and researchers have long regarded it as an ocean, but it has not had an official "stamp" as an ocean.

Get ready for new maps

The National Geographic Society announced the Southern Ocean on June 8 - World Oceans Day, and said it would now include it in the maps of the earth it publishes.

The organization began publishing maps as early as 1915, which have so far included four oceans.

"It's a kind of geographical 'nerd'"

"The Southern Ocean has long been recognized by scientists, but since there has never been international agreement on it, we have not formally defined it," says Alex Tate, chief geographer at National Geographic Society.

"In a way, it's a kind of geographical 'nerd'."

According to him, one of the main effects of the announcement will be in the field of education, and from now on students will be able to be exposed to the uniqueness of the Southern Ocean and its importance on Earth.

The Southern Ocean is not defined by the continents that surround it

As is well known, an ocean is defined as a large pool of salt water, separating continents.

However, the Southern Ocean is not defined by the continents that surround it, but by the "Antarctic Circumpolar Current".

The waters of this current are colder and less salty than the rest of the world's oceans.

This current "draws" its waters from three other oceans (Atlantic, Pacific and Indian), and thousands of species of endemic marine creatures, which are not found in other oceans, live in its territory.
