It all starts with a resume (Photo: ShutterStock)

It is said that even a journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step. In parallel: Our journey to getting a new job also has a starting point, the first step we must take is called - the resume.

Our resume document, explains Orit Brown, VP of the Manpower Israel Group and Director of Talent - Career Counseling, is the first impression we leave on recruiters, who examine masses of candidates for the various positions. Therefore, our resumes must be presented in an organized manner. Arranged and with a clear structure, which will help us to move to and from the page, everything we offer at the professional level for the job for which we differentiate.

"A resume is a marketing document in which you are the 'product', not just the biography," Brown explains. "Therefore, they should include your strengths, expertise, achievements and relative benefits that you have gained along the way. The goal is that everything in your document will convince those who read it that you are the right candidates for a job interview and to continue the process."

In the online world, a variety of resume documents are submitted for each position, making the competition particularly difficult and challenging. So how do we get recruiters to pull our resume out of the pile? To do this, one needs to know what those recruiters are testing and how these things can be highlighted. Brown explains what recruiters are looking for:

1) The resume should be as accurate as possible in terms of structure and wording - neat, structured, coherent,Without spelling errors and mistakes

2) Your suitability for the job - what have you done in your career to date and how can this be reflected in the job requirements?

3) Occupational stability - that there are no "holes" in your resume

4) Focus and ability to distinguish between the main thing and the treatment - on expanding it on irrelevant issues

5) Added values, such as languages, excellence, past achievements, etc.

6) Organizations have developed to this day, have you worked in good and well-known places in the Israeli market.

"Do not hesitate to 'pinpoint' your resume before submitting to a specific position," Brown suggests.

For example, strengthening strengths and experience in accordance with job-specific requirements.

What should be the resume structure?

As mentioned, do not overload unnecessarily.

A resume should be one page or two, no more.

The more focused you are, the more you will catch the attention of those who read them.

So what should be in the document?

• Contact details: first and last name, city of residence, telephone and email address (no need - date of birth, ID number)

• Personal summary

• Work experience, including significant achievements, especially from your last two jobs, Brown explains.

It is also important in significant workplaces to keep a summary that describes the organization in which you worked - field of occupation, sales cycles, number of employees, etc.

• Education and courses relevant to the position

• Knowledge of computer software and technologies.

Mention everything you control - office, information systems, etc.

Knowledge of different systems is always an advantage

• Languages and military service

Wait, personal summary - what is it?

The abstract "opens" the document and has now become an integral part of the resume. There are still those who take it lightly or give it up altogether, but Brown explains that it is important for two main reasons:

1) A well-written personal summary helps your "marketing". It is your "advertisement", and makes those who go through a lot of resumes want to delve into your own

2) A personal summary meets the practical need of recruiters who see many dozens of resumes on a daily basis. Through the summary, you decide whether to continue reading the resume or move on to the next document.

"The personal summary presents an initial 'picture' of 'who you are' professionally and personally," says Brown. "It includes a summary of your professional experience, skills, abilities and salient personality traits."

The structure of the personal summary is simple: it should be concise and short.

5-6 rows.

Maintain a ratio of 30:70.

70 percent of the personal summary will be devoted to summarizing the experience and professional skills, 30 percent to personal traits and characteristics.

One last thing - we explained what is.

But what * not * to write in a resume?

• Do not specify reasons for leaving previous positions / recommendations.

For this there is the job interview

• There is no need to indicate your months of employment next to each position.

Enough to write the years

• No need for extended family status (single / married / divorced / father of two)

• Bet on photos.

You do not need your own photo and you do not need to "decorate" the document with photos.

An image can also produce biases.

• Also bet on creative or phonetic formats or bright colors.

You want to stand out, but not be exceptional

• Do not "squeeze" or give up relevant details in the report to "keep" the resume on one page.

Now you are ready for the journey, and it will be successful! To
