Debswana, a Botswana diamond company, said it had found a 1,098-carat stone described as the third largest of its kind in the world.
The diamond, found on June 1st, was shown to President Mokgweetsi Masisi in the capital, Gaborone.
"The rare and extraordinary stone ... means a lot in diamonds and in Botswana," said Lynette Armstrong, managing director of Debswana.
"It brings hope to the troubled nation," he added.
The diamond is also the largest ever found in the company's history, a joint venture between the government and diamond giant De Beers. The largest diamond in the world is the Cullinan, of 3,106 carats and discovered in South Africa in 1905, followed by the Lesedi La Rona, of 1,109 carats, about the size of a tennis ball, was found in 2015 in Karowe, in the north. east of Botswana, an African leader in the production of these precious stones.
