The police in northern India are investigating the case of an abandoned baby.
A boat driver had saved the three-week-old girl from the Ganges, as reported by the BBC.
Screams would have alerted him, Gullu Chaudhary told the broadcaster.
And then he discovered the baby in a box that was decorated with images of Hindu deities - wrapped in a red scarf.
The baby was reportedly taken to hospital.
It should be healthy.
The authorities are now trying to determine how the girl ended up in the river and who the parents are.
Especially in poor families in India, girls can be seen as a financial burden.
Cases of abandoned female newborns are therefore not uncommon.
According to the police, a natal chart with the time and date of birth was found in the girl who has now been rescued.
Her name is therefore Ganga - the Hindi name for the river Ganges.
The state government announced, according to the BBC, that it will cover the costs of caring for the baby, which will initially be sent to a home.
In addition, Gullu Chaudhary should be rewarded with state services, as he is a "unique example of humanity".
