Because he wanted to repair a rear light on a moving car, a 38-year-old triggered a police operation in Aachen.
A woman driver was overtaken by a car in which the tail light had been removed and a moving hand protruded from the hole, the police said on Thursday.
The 32-year-old reported the license plate number to the police on Wednesday afternoon, who initiated a manhunt.
In Langerwehe, the officers finally met the 38-year-old vehicle owner.
This assured that it was his hand.
A police spokesman said he tried to solve a contact problem with the tail light while lying in the trunk while an acquaintance was behind the wheel of the car.
The man had shown himself to be understanding and got away with a warning.
