Is that art or can it go away?

For a painting by the pop star David Bowie, someone has apparently opted for the garbage can - now it is being auctioned: The 20 by 25 centimeter canvas bears a sign with Bowie's name, dated 1997 and a description of the painting as “Acrylic and Computer collage on canvas «.

According to auction house Cowley Abbott, a woman discovered the painting in the municipal landfill of Machar, a municipality in the Canadian province of Ontario.

There she had bought it for five Canadian dollars - the equivalent of a little more than three euros.

The auction ends on July 24th.

On Friday, the bids were the equivalent of almost 34,000 euros.

According to the auction house, the painting is part of a series that the musician created between 1995 and 1997.

Bowie painted 47 portraits on canvas under the title »Dead Heads«.

Those portrayed include band members, friends and acquaintances.

Some are self-portraits.

According to Cowley Abbott, Bowie's pictures showed "stylistic influences of German expressionists and painters of the London school such as Francis Bacon."

Bowie was not only active as a painter, he also owned an extensive art collection.

In 2016, around 350 works and objects from his private collection were auctioned.

They achieved a total of more than 38 million euros.
