It's been a tradition for more than 30 years: Thousands of condoms are handed out at the Olympics to encourage safe sex.
But this year it looks a little different due to the Corona measures, reports, among others, the Guardian and the US broadcaster CNN.
For example, around 150,000 condoms are supposed to be brought to men and women at the Tokyo Games - but they are not to be used under any circumstances.
The distributed condoms were "not intended for use in the athletes' village, but rather for the athletes to take with them to their home countries to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS," said the organizing committee.
Eat alone, sleep alone
Because of the corona pandemic, athletes have to adhere to strict hygiene and distance rules - they are even required to eat alone.
As a result, even closer human contact is not desired.
Nevertheless, the procedure causes astonishment: According to the Guardian, the Japanese climber Ken Noguchi said that he “simply cannot understand” that contraceptives are distributed and their owners are asked to keep them under lock and key at the same time.
