A baby was found alive Monday in this wooden box floating in the Ganges.

The little girl, who is said to be around a month old, was rescued by a fisherman in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, in northern India.

“I found the baby as I was going to do a ritual prayer along the river.

No one would leave a baby in a crowded place.

The baby was left in a corner.

There were other people but no one approached the baby, so I went there and took the baby and the box in which it was floating, ”explained to AFP Gullu Chaudhary, the sailor who found the newborn.

"It is difficult to say for sure how long she floated on the river," said OP Singh, head of the local police.

The authorities are trying to find out where the child comes from.

According to The Guardian newspaper, the fisherman received a new boat as a reward for his gesture.

According to Unicef, there are more than 30 million orphaned or abandoned children currently in India.
