A food manufacturer is recalling its tomato product for pizza: the varnish had come off in some cans and so contaminated the sauce.
Oberhaching - A crispy base and fruity tomato sauce are the basis of a good pizza for many.
At a Bavarian food manufacturer that also offers its tomato sauce with pieces for larger needs, there has now been a fatal error in production: Paul M. Müller GmbH, which specializes in canning food, calls one Batch of their ADRIA pizza tomatoes (Polpa di Pomodoro).
Paint peeling in cans of tomatoes: Heating could lead to thermal reactions
The reason: “During quality controls, occasional peeling of paint inside the cans was found.
This could lead to thermal reactions during the heating process, ”says a press release that is available to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety.
Because a health risk from the dissolved and heated paint components cannot be safely ruled out, the remaining cans have been withdrawn from sale according to the manufacturer.
Large format tomato cans: This batch is affected
Specifically, it is about the ADRIA pizza tomatoes (Polpa di Pomodoro) with a content of 4250 milliliters, which specified August 31, 2022 as the best before date.
The individual paint peeling was determined in the batch SI LJ 240 MHD / BBE: 31/08/2022 with the EAN (GTIN) 4 003735 770367 - the corresponding batch number can be found on the lid or bottom of the can.

Recall of tomato sauce: it can also be returned without a receipt
Anyone who has already bought a sauce from this batch can return the product in the respective market and get the price reimbursed - according to the manufacturer, it is not necessary to present the receipt.
According to the press release, other products are not affected by the paint peeling and thus by the recall.
A grilled cheese manufacturer also recently withdrew a product from the market and warned against consumption.
