"The protection of human life, the rescue of refugees, the support to the suffering in humanitarian crises, the welcome of the most vulnerable,
are commitments which the Italian Republic, in collaboration with the European Union and international organizations, has never stolen
, even in recent times marked by the pandemic ".
This is what the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella says on the
occasion of the World Refugee Day
.
"Over 80 million people are on the run, according to the United Nations High Commissioner who, to date, finds himself protecting nearly 100 million individuals," he adds.
"International law provides protection for those who are forced to leave their homes and countries due to conflicts, persecutions, climatic conditions, natural disasters and famine".
"Today's day - says the Head of State - requires
reflection to make the exercise of this international responsibility effective
".
"Individual stories and of peoples, even geographically close, appeal to our sense of solidarity, anchored to high moral and legal duties", adds Mattarella. "I address my heartfelt thanks - affirms the President of the Republic - to the women and men of the various administrations who, with dedication and a spirit of service, ensure the effectiveness of international protection on a daily basis. I would also like to recall the generosity with which private citizens, organizations of the civil society and religious institutions do their utmost in our country to assist refugees, also by promoting innovative experiences such as humanitarian corridors, a significant example in terms of reception at European level ".
