Love hurts, and marriage - it turns out - can kill.

A new study from Tel Aviv University finds that unsatisfactory married life increases men's risk of stroke and premature death.

The risk is higher for relatively young men, aged 50 and under.

Investigators have tracked the deaths of about 10,000 Israeli men for more than 30 years.

They found that marital dissatisfaction is a significant predictor of stroke and premature mortality, no less than known risk factors such as smoking and lack of exercise.

"We sought to analyze the data accumulated over the years according to various parameters, in order to identify behavioral and psychosocial risk factors that may predict stroke and / or early death for any reason," explained Dr. Shachar Lev-Ari, Head of the Department of Health Promotion at the University Tel Aviv.

How happy are you from 1 to 4?

In the study, published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, the researchers performed statistical analyzes in a database of a long-term study that followed for 32 years the health and behavior patterns of about 10,000 men, all Israeli civil servants, with an emphasis on stroke deaths and all mortality. Reason.

At the beginning of the study the participants were in their 40s on average, and over the years 64 percent of them died from various diseases.

Prior to the study, they were asked, among other things, to rate their marital satisfaction, on a scale of 1 (very satisfied) to 4 (not satisfied at all).

After analyzing the data, the researchers discovered, to their surprise, that this ranking is a predictor of life expectancy, no less than smoking or lack of physical activity.

For example, the death toll from a stroke was 69 percent higher among those who gave their marriage a score of 4 (not satisfied at all) compared to those who gave a score of 1 and who were very happy with their marriage.

When it comes to death for any reason, the gap was 19 percent in favor of happily married people.

The researchers performed a statistical analysis of all known risk factors for cardiovascular mortality, such as diabetes, hypertension, BMI and socioeconomic status.

Here, too, the figure surprised them greatly - it turns out that the relative risk of mortality from any cause among those who were dissatisfied with their marriage compared to those who were satisfied was 1.21 times higher for those unhappy with marriage, these rates are similar to data recognized in the professional literature among smokers or non-smokers.

As mentioned, the life expectancy gaps were larger among men who were under 50 at the beginning of the study.

"In older age, the gap is smaller, perhaps due to the couple's adaptation processes to the relationship over time," says Dr. Ben-Ari. This assumption is well-founded: past research has already found that marriages actually improve as the years go by. Years after married couples, with between 15 and 35 years of experience in their marriage, found that with age there was an increase in positive behaviors such as humor and affection, and at the same time, negative emotions such as self-defense decreased as the years passed.

"Our research shows that the quality of marriage and family life has health implications for life expectancy: Men who reported a sense of failure in their marriage died at a younger age than those who had a good marriage," concludes Dr. Lev-Ari. "The findings are consistent with other studies that have shown benefit."
