A new study conducted at the University of Haifa and published in the Journal of Hypertension found evidence that exposure of young and healthy people with blood pressure levels slightly higher than normal to unpleasant looks, such as viewing destruction photos or dead people, causes extreme changes in blood pressure, which can affect hypertension. Blood pressure at a later age.

"Research findings suggest that there may be people who are considered healthy in terms of blood pressure at a young age, but they are actually at risk. Although blood pressure in old age is a significant risk factor for early death, there are almost no tests at young ages to identify factors that can cause us to develop. The disease, "said Prof. Hadas Okon-Singer, head of the Department of Cognitive Science at the University of Haifa and one of the study's editors.

Young people with normal blood pressure levels may actually be in the risk group.

Today, in Western society, about half of the population over the age of 55 suffers from high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for premature death.

Hypertension can lead to heart attacks, strokes and dementia.

According to the researchers, despite this condition, there is very little research and knowledge about risk factors among young and healthy people that can lead to hypertension in old age.

In the current study, researchers Dr. Abigail Wiener and Prof. Okon-Singer from the School of Psychology at the University of Haifa, together with Dr. Pavel Goldstein from the School of Public Health at the University of Haifa and Dr. Keren Duanis-Barak from the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, asked to examine the effect of stimuli Motor and emotional stimuli about the blood pressure status of young and healthy people whose blood pressure levels at rest indicate that they are at risk of developing hypertension later in life.

The study involved 107 subjects aged 20-30, half of whom had normal resting blood pressure and half of whom had slightly higher blood pressure than the norm - a hall that is now considered normal.

"In fact, these are people whose blood pressure levels at rest are considered normal according to currently accepted norms. However, from the blood pressure tests we performed on them at rest, we identified that their blood pressure levels were at the high level of the norm," the researchers said.

That being said, Ionic - the findings are not encouraging.

Subjects were given two tasks in which 50 and 57 subjects participated respectively: one motor - pressing a spring device for hand practice, the other emotional - passive observation of unpleasant images such as: people's bodies, various accidents, threatening animals.

The researchers tested blood pressure with an innovative technique that allows continuous measurement of blood pressure with the help of a device worn on the finger in the palm and by surgery developed that allows for a continuous examination of the blood pressure response.

Extreme response to emotional events

The results of the study show that the people in the risk group showed extreme reactions in the blood pressure indices in both the motor task and the emotional task - compared to subjects with normal blood pressure.

"Our findings may indicate that people who are at risk for developing hypertension in old age are constantly reacting more radically when exposed to emotional events - including those we encounter on a daily basis, even such as watching the news. If so, assistance. "Emotional regulation may prevent the development of the disease in these people," said Dr. Wiener.
