"It's not a wrap, it's an abuse": the image that terrified the country

Baby wrapping is a method that many parents use to calm the baby and to allow him to sleep better.

This is certainly not the case of the abuse revealed in a video in which a one-year-old and an eight-month-old child is seen tied up in cloth.

Sherry Glazer explains how long it is allowed to wrap babies and whether it is at all effective

In the video: Documentation from the security cameras in the garden in Sderot (Walla system!)

A video from the security cameras of a kindergarten in Sderot was published last night, documenting how the kindergarten assistant tied up a one-year-old and eight-month-old toddler using diapers.

While the caregivers argued through their lawyer that this was a "known technique" and "an old Soviet method that is acceptable," the picture shook the hearts of many, including my own maternal heart.

And here it is important to clarify - in the picture you see a toddler tied up, not wrapped.

In one small but big word, lies the difference between the recommended and embracing wrap and the most horrible and forbidden tying of all.

What causes babies to sleep half the day, and what happens to those who do not get enough sleep?

Wrapping - When Yes?

From birth to 3-4 months of age, the baby experiences an initial acquaintance with the world and his body: he does not recognize his limbs, may wake up from his arms and legs fluttering around him uncontrollably, and often experiences the moro reflex, known as the "panic reflex" that bounces his body And arouses him.

All of these symptoms occur mainly when lying on your back, which is the position recommended for sleeping by the Ministry of Health in order to prevent cot death.

So it is difficult for newborn babies to fall asleep and fall into a deep and continuous sleep.

The wrap, which is of course done only lying on the back, neutralizes the physiological stimuli (moro reflex and limb waving).

Thus in fact the wrapping reduces the chance of death in the crib.

Proper wrapping, at the right age, calms the baby by simulating the feeling of wrapping in the womb, gives him confidence and warmth, encourages good sleep and does not harm him physically or mentally.

From the age of 4 months at the latest we will stop wrapping.

Wrapping - When not?

From the age of 3-4 months the Moro reflex is gone, the babies already recognize the limits of their body and their limbs, they manage to relax on the back as well, they start to develop, roll over, get over six, explore the world, and it is important to allow them this freedom.

Therefore, from the age of 4 months at the latest we will stop the wrapping (possible gradually - for a few days one hand outside, then two hands outside, and finally the whole body) and release them on their way.

How to do it right?

There are many videos on the net about proper wrapping, and the principle in all of them is the same: a dedicated wrapping blanket or one Tetra diaper should suffice.

Of course a wrap on the back only, thin and non-warming fabric, in a tight way - not too loose but also not too tight.

Not too tight.

The wrap is not a tie, but as its name implies: a wrap around the baby's body and the insertion of the edges between the parts of the fabric.

There are dedicated wrap blankets with a zipper or tote bag designed for the little ones, or sleeping bags for babies for older ages.

All of these are normal and healthy for the baby.

How do you know it's not true?

There is no doubt that what was seen in the horrific picture - a large and developed child who is not wrapped but tied, in countless diapers on diapers that prevent his movement and freedom - is simply not true.

There is no such sedative practice at such an age, at most a “bear hug”: a caregiver figure embracing the raging toddler from behind, back to abdomen (the toddler’s back is turned to the caregiver’s abdomen).

And here, too, if the child resists - let go and allow him to relax in other ways.

And in any case - do not tie toddlers.

forever.
